Mission Statement

Sterling Park Elementary School’s media program functions as the information center of the school providing appropriate resources within and reaching beyond the walls of the facility when necessary. The goal of the school library media program is to ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas, information and technology.


Organization of Materials All media center materials (books and audiovisual) may be located through the electronic catalog (called iPac or Horizon) by author, title, subject, or keyword and are shelved according to the Dewey Decimal Classification System.


E EVERYBODY “Picture books” are shelved     
alphabetically by the author’s last name.



   F FICTION “Chapter books” are shelved
   alphabetically by the author’s last name.



R REFERENCE Reference materials are shelved numerically    
and can only be checked out by staff members for use in their
classroom. Students may use these items in the media center.     
There is one set of encyclopedias available for students to
check out when needed.




B Biography True books about real people are shelved alphabetically by
the last name of the person being featured (not by author’s last name).

Non Fiction

000-999 Non-Fiction Non-fiction or “true” books     
are shelved numerically from 000 to 999. When 
the numbers are the same, then they are 
shelved alphabetically by the author’s last name.
